Balancing Your Energy in the Process

 

The rush and nervousness of missing a flight or train, cold, dry air-conditioning, heavy congesting food, lack of sleep; they all have Vata aggravating qualities being erratic, scattered, quick, cold & dry. Many us have experience this at times; it can easily make the trip fairly challenging to say the least!

Well good news travelers, with a little more self-observation and responding to what we need, we can make our journey a whole lot easier, calmer and more comfortable.

Here are some suggestions below that can really help the flying experience.

Simply, these are ways you can bring in the

OPPOSITE QUALITIES to BALANCE THE ENERGIES at play.

They can of course be applied to any kind of travel, such as on public transport or on a road trip.

VATA (speaking ayurvedically now) is the energy of MOVEMENT and is a dispersing, erratic, unpredictable force very easily goes out of whack!

So when traveling, we are more prone to worries & anxiety, post digestive symptoms, poor circulation, constipation, lowered immunity that leads to catching a cold.

PLUS when in the VATA season (autumn & winter) we are further vulnerable to these imbalances.

So if you have lots of Vata energy in your constitution (ie. coolness, dryness, irregular habits/ elimination, anxiety) you need to take more care; these TIPS below will really help.

These are not must-dos or rules and everyone doesn’t need to do these things.

The choices are infinite and you can get very creative!

HOT TIPS FOR COMFY TRAVEL

Esp. for people who feel the cold

  • Rock up early! Plan to give plenty of buffer time at the airport to avoid the anxiety of rushing & worrying about missing something

  • Take a warm bath in the morning or night before

  • Take a scarf/ shawl, maybe a small blanket & extra pair of socks

  • Oil ears and nose before going to the airport or traveling on public transport; help protects from airborne viruses & bacteria

  • Take an empty thermos & have it filled up with boiling water at the airport

  • Take some fresh sliced ginger or a digestive tea to improve digestive capacity

  • Take a serving of home cooked, moist, nourishing food, prepared with some digestive spices, or

  • Select soups or broths, warm/ liquid meals at the airport or whilst on the road; far easier to digest well

  • Do pranayama, a calming breath cycle while waiting for take off, e.g. 4-7-8

  • Use noise-cancelling headphones and play calming, grounding sounds e.g. Schumann resonance, base chakra singing bowl, yoga nidra

  • On arrival, sit for a few minutes to 'ground' and take some slow, deep breathes e.g. 4-7-8 breaths

  • Give a buffer day when you arrive anywhere or return home to have time to ground and reclaim your supportive life-giving practices

  • Ground - Earth: Put your bare feet on the ground the day you arrive for at least 10 minutes (if it's not chilly!)

  • Have a warm bath that day if possible

  • Gemstone suggestions:

    - red jasper or smokey quartz grounding

    - shungite or smokey quartz for EMF protection & detoxing

    - carnelian & citrine to boost energy

    - moonstone to promote calm, smooth & optimistic travel experiences
